The Kait Essay

In order to redeem myself, I have been commanded to write an essay about my friend Kait. I had taken some head shots for her a while back. I then took one of them and made it into art for an art show. The piece actually sold and was praised for its feeling and realness. Let me explain. The part called for her to look like a recovering meth addict. She did some amazing makeup work on herself and the result was someone who looked like a wreck. This is an enormous feat, considering Kait is one of the most beautiful people I have had the pleasure to call friend. So to start off, I will not be showing you the picture I sold, but I will be showing you this one:

She is the blonde and the gorgeous brunette is Lindsay her best friend. I was lucky that weekend to spend time with such amazing women, even though they almost drove me crazy!

That is her and I at ACL drunk and tired. No she is not naked. She was a sport and put up with my camping hobbies!!

So on to the Essay...

KAIT: AN ESSAY by Toad Bennett

Considering you have made it this far, I can assess that you find Kait to be beautiful and interesting. Now I will successfully convince you of her other qualities. These being Humor, Genius and Love! There are few humans of this rock that can say they possess so many of these great qualities. We are in a drought, sort of speak, of true talented and original people. This saddens me, but then I think of my friend Kait and all is well in my mind.

When first meeting this tiny blonde woman, we came to the conclusion that it was a tragedy we had not met each other sooner. We had worked at the same place of business for quite some time, yet had never crossed each other's path. We met at a second job that our mutual friend and equally talented friend John Milner had needed help with. It consisted of sitting around telling mindless people where their event was and if they needed water they could find the fountain down the hall and to the left. So this gave us plenty of time to chatter about our lives. We found out that we had a lot in common. Especially the addiction to laughter. Kait the actress could cause me to blurt out large amounts of chuckles at any given moment. She also scared the living daylights out of me the first night we went out on the town. She decided to show off her acting skills in a very dramatic monologue. It consisted of tears and a story of grief. I had no idea this was her. I thought I was watching a completely different person. And then she snapped out of it and started to laugh. She had me, the one that prides himself on not being easily deceived. I was one thing, very amused.

After the laughter came deep thought. Maybe I should call it a deep maze in which we could never solve. We were very good at finding new ways through this maze, but we never could understand it. Religion, education, sex, war, politics and even reincarnation, there wasn't a part of the maze we didn't talk about. Her understanding of the world at a young age was phenomenal. She investigated anything she didn't quite believe or understand. This is a part of intelligence that most do not speak of, especially in our hometown. Faith states are what I call them. The Bible Belt is the region. Questioning the core belief was definitely frowned upon. I am glad it didn't stop her from filling her head with knowledge. Even though I had explored the maze myself, I was sometimes hesitant or lazy to go further. Kait pushed me forward, handed me knowledge and tested my mind.

Love is a hard thing for people like me. It is another part of the maze I don't quite understand. I know I feel it for many people. Sometimes without knowing why. I do not take it lightly though. I am not a huge fan of most people I meet and could do without large groups of friends. I like having the few people I can spill my guts out too. When I say few, it could possibly be only three. Kait is one of them. No matter what I say. No matter how unrealistic, unsophisticated, unintelligent or even down right mad, Kait seems to listen to it all. This is how you truly love someone. All that other bullshit is just chatter to me. I needed that when I met Kait, she helped me out from under my rock.

And in true Essay form, in conclusion and with many gramatical and punctuation errors, Kait is in a league all her own. Beauty, Intelligence, Humor, Humility and Love. She possesses more than most beings on this planet. She is a whole lot more than just a pretty little blonde woman.

The New Me

So in order to be healthier, I am taking drastic measures. That means my food intake will change from whatever I feel like, to pure and natural fuel for my body. I am going to work on this philosophy, the only things I put in my body will be fruits, vegetables, nuts and the occasion wine or beer. Everything else is not aloud. I am also going to eat these the easy way, since I don't have time to sit down nowadays. So I will be blending them. I basically took the Naked Juice company's idea, but I would rather mix my own stuff. Although I am still going to drink this one:

It is my favorite flavor!

I am also going to start playing basketball, tennis and riding my bike more often. I am going to try and walk or ride to places that are short distances. This should save me a lot of money and trim some of these pounds. I just want to wake up every morning feeling refreshed instead of in the clouds.

I will post my recipes every week in order to keep a hold of them for the future.
This week I made a drink with the following:

Next week will probably be more adventurous...maybe some kiwi and broccoli or parsley with ginger root and mango. We shall see.

Inside Out!

About a year ago I was taking tons of portraits of myself so that I could put together a series for my Parents. My Mom has complained every year since graduation for an updated portrait of her son. Well I decided to go all out and what came out of it was some crazy stuff. I not only enjoyed doing the portraits, but it seemed to show other sides of me that I didn't even know. While making this portrait series, I stumbled upon a website. It had tons of black and white portraits of normal everyday people from all over the world. I then kept reading and realized it was the work of one man. His idea was to take these portraits and blow them up into a huge format, print them out and then paste them to public walls. This was right up my alley! So I sent one of my portraits in and they accepted it to be printed. They sent it to me along with instructions on how and where to paste my portrait. It took a while, but I finally found a home for my face!!

BEFORE & AFTER

I had an art show at the great Brass Bell Studio! Half art gallery, half bike restoration. So I asked the owners if I could paste my face right next to the entrance. They were so pumped, they even helped paste it. It was truly an awesome way to show my personality and my art!

Writer's Block?

I just wrote a huge blog about loss. I poured my guts out about my lack of feeling during certain losses in my life. Making me feel like a Schizoid. I read over it before hitting publish post and realized I didn't want to share it yet. This also made me realize that I suck at sharing my deeper feelings. Of pain, of Love, of remorse. Why do I block them sometimes? I figured its like Writer's Block, sometimes you just don't know what to say. So you just carry on, hoping that no one noticed or maybe they will have Writer's Block too. I will share it some time, until then.

The Generations Conversation

This morning I read an article on the huge gap in thought the Generations have about life and politics in America. As always I am underwhelmed by the idea that this is news. Every Century has its divide in thought, but I do agree that the divide is deeper than it has been in some time. May they rest in Peace, if my Grandparents were alive today, they would not be in the same mind frame that I am in right now. They would be retired and not working and waiting to die. As harsh as this sounds, what right do they have to make decisions on our future. When I am old and waiting to die, I am going to worry more about what I am going to fix for dinner or what book I am going to read. I am sorry, but the Silent Generation's voice is too loud. Their votes are worth way more then ours. Some of them are still writing laws in Congress. John McCain does not have my future interests in mind. The greed of politics and corporation don't have my interests in mind. So this is what I am going to do: Start a business, work in that business everyday, live near that business, eat, drink, shop local. My money stays near me even when it is no longer mine. I have dismissed the education of my past. I was taught by my parents and grandparents to get a degree and a full time job with benefits, to buy and consume and own. That education has made me poor. I promise to never make anyone else rich, that I don't have a personal relationship with. Minimalism is key. Localism is key. Naturalism is key. Self educate, re-evaluate and survive!!!

So this summer I bought a new smart phone. One that has a very good camera on it and apps that make it easy to spice up an image. I have always been a critic of these camera phones. I think sometimes it takes away the fun in photography, but know I am spoiled with having one. So I at least try to make each photo worth it! Here is what I have done so far:

I imagine myself in a small valley, high in elevation amongst a cluster of mountains, a lake rests in the middle, calm and blue with life on, in and around it, the sky is low with tints of orange and pink, the sun has hidden itself west beyond the peaks, the air is cool and touches my skin with a lite breeze, I walk ever so slowly in the tall weeds that have grown wildly in this valley for ages, there is a bird singing to the moon and stars that are beginning to appear, a mosquito dines on my arm, and I am in a state of euphoria, the ground moves beneath me to make their presence known, I open my eyes to a stampede of wild horses, many different shades of brown, black and white race past me, all of them combine to make one spotted horse, a mighty wind takes me from my feet, I glide across the air as if weightless, there is no longer a rumble beneath me, no longer a mosquito dining, no longer a bird singing, but the sky changes to a dark black, it is filled with stars and a full moon, after I realize this, I am no longer in a valley, there is no lake, there are no weeds, there is no breeze, the mountains are now walls, the sky is now white, the ground is now beneath me, I lay upon a bed with white sheets, the straps that bind me are brown with a silver buckle, the sun in now a light bulb, the stampede is now doctors, why when my mind wanders to a beautiful land, do they feel I am crazy, why do they feel they should take it from me, this land is mine, I have created it, it is more beautiful than any land I have seen with my natural eyes, yet I am the one who is crazy.

Inner Monologue Failure...

It seems every time I have a conversation inside my skull rather than outside, I never seem to agree on anything. Meaning, my two thoughts on whether or not to do something seems to always end up with no clear idea! For example: I once thought about writing children's books, and then realized I would probably be a much better writer of dirty jokes. So the thought of writing a children's book was tossed in the trash in the back of my mind. So then I see that Madonna wrote one and then I get confused. How come she can be so dirty minded and then write a kid's book that actually didn't do so bad? In her case, she is able to agree on both sides of an inner conversation about what to do. She probably had this conversation a long time ago, but the answer was to first become a sex icon and then when she is rich and famous, write a kid's book! This inner monologue version is genius.

So why can't my mind just say, "Write what ever comes to mind and maybe one day you will write both types of books and then maybe a sci-fi book before you die!" Oh glorious it would be to let loose the ideas in my mind. Like just before I started typing I thought, what kind of t-shirt would a wolf wear? The picture that hit my mind was a black t-shirt with a portrait of a hunter in an orange vest and camouflage hat while hugging a rifle.

I really want to start a brand like this! Although, I keep telling myself that wolves won't buy it, and wolves being my target market, it doesn't make it an easy sell to my inner conversations! These failures of ideas happen everyday. If I could just tell myself that hunters would buy this shirt, well I would have a bigger target market and a new business!

This is basically me stating that I have decided to finally use all the connections I have been setting up for my entire adult life. This collaboration is so large and ambitious that it may kill me. I feel I have no other choice. This isn't a new idea, it is very old. Yet, it needs to be modernized and spread no matter the personal cost. After that being said...Lauren is not a part of a few, but many progressive people living amongst a group that seems endless. She captures every feeling I have toward my own up bringing and my reality in modern times. I have had the honor to hear this poem live. Sometimes the emotion in the crowd of listeners is so obvious, you can't help but tear up. I was raised to believe that as a christian I would be oppressed for my faith. Know it seems I am oppressed for not believing. I have learned that until you understand that there is no set definition to life, you will have to rely on faith. It is late and I just watched a movie that disturbed me. It was based on a true story, those always seem to make me sick. To think that something like that actually happened. I seem to live in this fantasy world where I think nothing like what I just watched could ever happen. The sad part is, it does, over and over again. It doesn't matter the movie, it was very well done, acting was great, story told uniquely, but it was disturbing.

I wasn't going to write a blog tonight, but watching this movie sparked a lot of thoughts about what just happened this week, mainly today. This week has been amazing. I have had to work most of it, but it was good work. It was also broken up with Art and Music festivals that make me very happy. I enjoyed amazing food and a walk in the new downtown park that my tax dollars paid for. It is gorgeous, I can see myself and others enjoying many hours relaxing next to a new fountain, or a newly sod lawn. Reading, writing and celebrating all that is good in our growing city. Watching the new Devon skyscraper rise to the clouds. Then after all this I attended the Norman Music Festival. Free to all, unless your hungry and thirsty, then it cost an arm and a leg to enjoy it. Local musicians and artists have made it easy lately to live in a state like Oklahoma.

Then with a quick slap back into reality, a local politician makes a racist remark and once again our state and city seem to be the laughing stalk. Why do we insist on voting for bigots? Of all the things we have done correctly, we are still hypocrites. I am excited and ashamed all at the same time. Why can't I just be happy about where I live and not worry about radicalism? I know it is this way everywhere in the world and has always been this way, but aren't we suppose to learn from our mistakes?

I also had the big sit down session with my folks for the second time this year. My folks are traditional and have been through so many things in their lives, yet they will never be able to understand mine. Experience doesn't always make you an expert. Lovingly we communicated as best we could possible and we left things with hugs. I am a firm believer in communication and honesty. If you can't tell the people you love about your life, even the stuff that hurts them, then who can you tell? My folks have always tried to define what is right and wrong, what is evil and good, but I feel there is no definition of either. What was once wrong might now be right and will soon become wrong again. The cycle of ignorance will never cease to exist. No matter how many historical books we write, no matter how many wars we fight, there will never be an actual wrong or right!!!

Osama Bin Laden is dead. Right or Wrong? He died because he believed in something that he felt was right. Good or Evil? I took joy in jokes about his death. Right or Wrong? Tomorrow hundreds of young Muslims will devote their lives to destroying democracy. Good or Evil? Tomorrow gas prices will go up ten cents for no reason. Right or Wrong?

I am going to live my life based on happy or unhappy. If the decision I make causes me to be happy, then I will go through with it. If it make me unhappy, you get the idea!!!!!

When I daydream, not all is understood of what I am thinking of. These are moments that I wish I could remember. The topic of the daydream seems to leave as quickly as it came. Today was so warm and calm, we had to break out the blankets and the box wine and lay out on the front lawn with the laptops and take it in!!

This last weekend just about almost killed me. I did more this weekend then I had done all this entire month really. Lets go over my schedule shall we:
Friday afternoon was the beginning with a drive to Tree and Leaf Clothing to pick up tshirts for The IAO Galleries Biting the Apple exhibit!
Then straight downtown to the gallery to drop them off. Where I thought I might get some volunteerin done, but no one was around.
I hightaled it back to the Lake House to change and grab a nap.
The first night of the Show was crazy, but was a huge success.
I went to bed fairly early so that I could wake up around 5am to valet at the Hotel.
5am...5:15am...5:30am, I woke up to Freddie the cat licking my face. He saved my sleepy butt. I had turned off my alarm on accident. Made it to work by 7am and proceed to run up and down stairs for 8 hours. I got paid to work out, not bad.
After work I headed straight to the gallery to help with whatever needed tweakin.
We finished up what we could and I was off to the Lake House one more time.
The night was such a huge success that the board members will want us back next year to plan the event. Best news I have heard in a long time!
Today I slept in and dragged myself back to work. Another 8 hours, but this time all I did was stand and watch the Thunder Playoff game! THUNDER UP!!
Now here I sit, loading my BTA pics and typing on this blog!

So I just have to brag about someone real quick. Amy, "The Impressive", as I call her, was the one that suggested I be on the BTA committee. I had no idea that would lead to such a fun time and a large group of new friends! I am always surprised at all Amy does. She juggles a full time job, which happens to be more full time then most people do. She volunteers, is on two boards for charities, and she looks gorgeous every day while doing so! I never knew when I met this quiet, kind and beautiful woman, that she would open my eyes to such great things! I consider her a very close friend and a partner in crime! We are off to Wakarusa soon for Music Festival madness!

Now it is time for bed!

Here I go again, trying to find a way to make my family happy with my happiness! You would think that happiness would be the only thing you would want for your child. Knowing that you did something to make them happy and gave them the right attitude to live by. What do I know though, I am not a parent and might never be. I would like to think that if I ever do become a parent, that I would teach my child how to smile every day and to treat people kindly no matter who they are. I would teach them how to survive with little in their pockets, so that when they have abundance life could be easy. I would teach them to be thrifty and crafty, teach them an art, teach them love! Why should I have to teach them anything else? If all were taught with love, then hate would not exist! A dreamer can dream!

I am on a break from my Parents. I am 31 years of age and still have parents who feel as if they can tell me how to live. You did your best to raise me, now I am on my own. This is the natural way of life. Why do we deny nature so much? Religion and Society and Greed and Hatred are all to blame for the way we think we have to live our lives. All I know is, I am happier now than I have ever been. I have a great job with great friends and great roommates! I smile everyday and try to appreciate everything around me! Living life to the fullest shouldn't be shameful to others, but I guess I have shamed the ones closest to me for living!

So my pride took a huge hit yesterday! This doesn't happen often because I am a very confident and prideful person. I don't know where it comes from. It came to a surprise to me that a couple of photos that I took did not make it into an art gallery. I have come up with reasons why mine didn't make it in, but it doesn't really matter. The one thing that keeps me from being depressed about this though is, well I helped a friend get over her fear of submitting her work. Her work was accepted for the same gallery, she deserved it, the work was great! She is very talented and well worth the pain for her happiness in her self. She lacks the confidence and pride I have in her own work. Even if everyone around her is telling her she is talented and an amazing photographer, writer, stylist, etc. etc., she still seems to doubt herself.

It is hard for me to feel that way. I owe a lot of that to my Grandmother and my Big Sister. Both of these lovely ladies have always believed in themselves, that what they were doing was worth it. If they ever lacked any confidence in their work, well they never showed anyone. I try to be like them everyday. Sometimes it gets me in trouble, but other times it impresses others into believing in me. If I could teach anyone anything before I die, it would be to believe in one's self to do what ever makes them happy regardless of what others may think about it. If you aren't smiling, then you aren't living! My Grandmother smiled everyday no matter what!

My Big Sis is working hard to as the Director of Alternative Education for the Stat of Oklahoma. She is under funded and under appreciated. Yet she gets up every morning happy that she will make a difference in someone's life. Giving a voice to people who never knew they had one. She is pushing programs that should be used in Public and Private education that have been working wonders on the lowest of the low and the least educated. I know she will one day make a difference in the way our children will be educated! She smiles everyday!

I totally got my yoga on this morning. I happen to be lacking in flexibility, but I hope that will change soon. My roommates were showing off their skills with their pretzel like poses and ease of flexibility. I will get better at it and I feel a ton better for it. Now I need a nap! Namaste Ya'll!!!!

The girls are back from Bali with all their love and stories. It is good to see them back and with so much excitement for their futures. It is strange to me that a place can change your outlook on life that easily. I want to have that strange to happen to me. I love life, but I need it to inspire me to do amazing things. Living where I am right now, well it isn't inspiring. Their are amazing people around me and I love them very much, but they have a huge mountain to climb to make things better in a city of hatred. If you are different and not a believer you are shit here. I tried to stay and help change that, but I am tired and need to move on.

There are just some days that wear you out. There are some days where not much is accomplished, yet still wear you out. Today was that day. Plans for the family March birthday celebration have been put on hold because of my Mother's illness. Although I do not hope illness to anyone, this made for a wonderfully lazy day. I woke up early because of daylight savings time. I fed the dog and let her be. I then dressed for athletic battle on the tennis court. My friend Trang is a sweet and beautiful Asian woman, but when put upon a court and weapon in hand, she turns into a warrior. After she had me running all over, I needed a rest. I read and drank coffee. Then I ventured to the lake house to nap on the couch. I woke up lazy, not ready to do much of anything. This state of mind was helped by the gloomy weather. A clear opposite of the day that came before it. This is what I looked like after said nap.

I look like a million bucks right there. This picture shows my ages. Bags under my eyes and a wrinkled forehead. I felt great though. It then started to rain and I opened the windows to hear that noise that I love so much. The thought of the Earth being cleaned made me want to take a shower, so I did. The rest of the evening was spent on the computer with a host of friends. My roommates telling me made up stories of love and life in Bali. My Alaskan friend of Earthquakes and her love for the use of the word Fuck! I then got on skype to find a past employee and then my roommates! Such a strange day! To add to the strangeness, I leave you with a video that makes me laugh!

So yesterday happened to be my 31st birthday...it lacked in eventfulness, but was fruitful in productiveness. I will say that being born the 10th day of March has its up sides. It also happens to be The International Day of Awesome! This I would have to agree with and as someone who does not agree with almost every holiday that exists, this one happens to be okay! Also this is the day when Chuck Norris was born. This to me makes it a day of national treasure. I do not agree with his politics, but I do agree he is a bad ass.

I do not love the praise I receive every year for being forced out of my Mother's womb...I happened to like it in there. It was sort of like a jail cell fashioned by the Ritz Carlton. Warm, jacuzzi like liquid surrounded me, fresh meals fed straight to my belly everyday, never having to have a wake up call, an infinite do not disturb sign. So please stop fashioning me as an idol for a small 24 hour time frame. It is a waste. Just go out and party everyday and drink like tomorrow is a new start!

Instant Memory...

You never know how much you miss something until that memory is triggered. Today while walking the dog, I could hear the baseball practice going on down the road at the High School. I played baseball for 8 years as a kid. I loved it, but as with everything in my life, I got bored with it. So I started running track and playing tennis to make up the time I wasn't playing basketball, which happened to be my favorite thing to do before I held a tennis racket.

So I hear the crack of the bat, destroying a baseball into the field and it instantly gave me the urge to pick up a glove and catch it. I started to smile and feel so young. Then I realized I was walking a dog that isn't mine near a lake that was windy and cold. That millisecond of memory made me so happy though. If someone could harness that power and turn it into a drug, that would be my addiction.

I might just have to share it with my Father. He loved baseball more than anything growing up, and he was great at it. I know he still gets this memory from time to time. He watched his boys play and now his grandkids. Maybe that is why we have children, to remember the things we did as kids. This is not me rationalizing becoming a dad, I am simply stating that is why we have kids. I think!

My Niece is becoming quite the Softball player!!

I love the inconsistent life I lead. I think life would be boring with the personality that everyone knows what they are getting. Yes, this means I am okay with being a mystery, but I think most people now expect the unexpected out of me. Exactly what I didn't want from life. So I wander on through without a care of which turn I will take. There is never a right or a left turn, all that matters is where I end up!
